The Will of God - Divine Guidance

Philippians 2:12 "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."

1 John 5:14-15 (NKJV) 14 "Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him."

Selected Thoughts on God's Guidance

This is a compilation of a variety of noteworthy authors on the subject of God's guidance.

Andrew Murray: Confusion on the Will of God in prayer

"God wills a great deal of blessing to His people, which never comes to them. He wills it most earnestly, but they do not will it, and it cannot come to them. This is the great mystery of man’s creation with a free will, and also of the renewal of his will in redemption, that God has made the execution of His will, in many things, dependent on the will of man."

These helpful thoughts come from a "note" section of one of the chapters of With Christ in The School of Prayer(Read the rest of Murray's thoughts in the regard by clicking on the link.)

George Müller and the Will of God

"The child who has again and again besought His Heavenly Father not to allow him to be deluded, nor even to make a mistake, is at peace, perfectly at peace concerning this decision; and has thus the assurance that the decision come to, after much prayer during weeks and months, is the leading of the Holy Spirit; and therefore purposes to go forward, assuredly believing that he will not be confounded, for he trusts in God. Many and great may be his difficulties; thousands and ten thousands of prayers may have ascended to God, before the full answer may be obtained; much exercise of faith and patience may be required; but in the end it will again be seen, that His servant, who trusts in Him, has not been confounded.’"

God's Guidance and Hearing God's Voice - Dan Augsburger

I am often asked: "How can I determine God's will for my life? Several years ago I attempted to answer this question in the newsletter that I used to send out. I think you will find it helpful.

The God-Planned Life - James McConkey

McConkey isn't that well known, but his books are among the very spiritual books that one can read. I strongly urge you to read and savor his books. You will not be disappointed if you do!

Secret of Guidance - F. B. Meyer

"How much of our Christian work has been abortive because we have persisted in initiating it for ourselves, instead of ascertaining what God was doing, and where He required our presence! We dream bright dreams of success. We try to command it. We call to our aid all kinds of expedients, questionable or otherwise. At last we turn back, disheartened and ashamed, like children who are torn and scratched by the brambles, and soiled by the quagmire. None of this had come about if only we had been, from the first, under God's unerring guidance. He might test us, but He could not allow us to fail." (Read the rest of this wonderful chapter from Meyer's book, The Secret of Guidance.)

Difficulties Regarding Divine Guidance - Hannah Whitall Smith

"There are four especial ways in which God speaks: by the voice of Scripture, the voice of the inward impressions of the Holy Spirit, the voice of our own higher judgment, and the voice of providential circumstances. Where these four harmonize, it is safe to say that God speaks. For I lay it down as a foundation principle, which no one can gainsay, that of course His voice will always be in harmony with itself, no matter in how many different ways He may speak. The voices may be many, the message can be but one. If God tells me in one voice to do or to leave undone anything, He cannot possibly tell me the opposite in another voice. If there is a contradiction in the voices, the speaker cannot be the same. Therefore, my rule for distinguishing the voice of God would be to bring it to the test of this harmony."
