Books *An Unknown Christian: “The Kneeling Christian” Zondervan Most individuals who get serious about prayer will eventually read the “Kneeling Christian.” For good reason, the book is filled with wonderful examples of what God is able to do through prayer, and will inspire you to pray even more.” A must read in my opinion.
An Unknown Christian: "The Victorious Life" This is one of the easiest to understand books written on the victorious life. Many individuals have been blessed in reading this book. The author wrote a series of books in response to questions that were given him, of which, this is one of them. I have quite a few of them in my library and I hope to make some of them available here over time.
Top Augsburger, Daniel: "The Good News of Daniel 8:14" I wrote this manuscript in the early 1980s as my masters thesis for a graduate degree at Andrews University. At the time, Daniel 8:14 was usually seen as a negative judgment and I was seeking to understand for myself what the Old Testament taught on the subject. My study was eye opening, and I still remember writing the conlusion that came spontaneously came flooding out of my heart: "Why this is good news, this is the good news of Daniel 8:14!" which would eventually become the title of the book. It was first duplicated, was made available on a world-wide basis in the 1980s, was widely read, and as a result the term "good news" began being associated with the judgement of Daniel 8:14. The book was published a few years ago. This isn't light reading but gives good answers on the subject.
Augsburger, Daniel: "The Indwelling Christ" This is a collection of writings on the theme of the Indwelling Christ and victory, and includes the Unknown Christian's "Victorious Life," Hudson Taylor's "Exchanged Life," Charles Trumbull's "The Life that Wins," Rosalind Goforth's "Victory Found," etc., and includes some of the best writing that I know of on victory and how to attain it. It also includes the outline to my "More Abundant Life" seminars. Individuals have purchased this book in quantity and given it to all the pastor's in their conference and their friends. Please write me if you would like to share this book in quanity,
Augsburger, Daniel: "The More Abundant Life" I have been speaking on the more abundant life for many years now and have gathered over time the best quotations I could find to help others find and experience the life that God wants all of us to enjoy. Following a recent seminar one attendee immiately approached me for a copy of them to use in her small group. Intensely practical, well supported by Scripture and other favorite authors, I think you gain an understanding of the subject that will be life-changing.
Augsburger, Daniel: "Selected Thoughts on Prayer" In this book I have taken the choice quotations and articles that I have found and collected over many years and compiled them in a topical manner. I think you will find most of your answers regarding prayer addressed in one of the topic areas. Any of the individual sections would make great study material for a midweek prayer group or small group.
Top Campbell, Duncan: Price and Power of Revival" I put this book together. It is wonderful on revival and I recommend it highly. He was a part of the revivals that took place at Lewis. I believe he speaks to serious issues that face us in our day.
Top Praying Hyde (Carre, E G): “Praying Hyde” Bridge Publishing John Hyde was greatly used of God in India. Eventually Hyde devoted much of his time to intercessory prayer. Excellent on the necessity of praise in prayer. This is a moving book and will inspire you to pray more.
Top Conant, James "Every Member Evangelism This book is wonderful on organizing a church for reaching a community and for teaching how Jesus wants to witness through us. Only a few chapters are available here on path2prayer.com
Top Fraser, James (Crossman, Eileen): “Mountain Rain” OMF Books This biography of James Fraser, missionary to the Lisu people of the Upper Salween area of China is wonderful on prayer. Provides much helpful information on the principles of prayer, as well as how prayer is practiced in daily life. Heavily documented with letters he sent to his mother, this is a must read book on prayer. You will come to see prayer in a new way. Look for “Behind the Mountains” on Fraser as well. Portions of this book are available at:
http://www.us.omf.org/content.asp?idx=2424.
Top Finney, Charles: “Autobiography” These books greatly influenced Goforth, Fraser and many others who were significantly used of God.
Finney, Charles: "Revival Lectures" A wide circle of Christians have discovered how to reach people for Christ as a result of read Finney. His preaching was a bit like Jonathan Edwards—a little oriented to negative appeals, but he was the MOST successful evangelist and his converts remained converted to a higher degree than other preachers of that era. Jonathan Goforth received and read the Revival Lectures and found there the secret of bringing revival to people, and planting churches. James Fraser found the same, as well as many others.
Top *Goforth, Rosalind: “How I Know God Answers Prayer” Moody Press This excellent book teaches much on prayer by way of stories shared of the Goforth’s experiences as missionaries in China. This is also a must read book. Learning how they got answers to prayer will help you greatly in your own prayer life. She also has a section on conditions to prayer, as well as a chapter on victory. I don’t think this book is in print unfortunately. If you can, try to also read the books on Jonathan Goforth. He was one of the most successful revivalists associated with the China Inland Mission. Goforth and Fraser were both greatly blessed and influenced by the autobiography of Charles Finney.
Top *Gordon, S D: “Quiet Talks on Prayer” Not in print This book on prayer is a must read along with Murray’s “With Christ in the School of Prayer.” It is intensely practical and is especially helpful pointing out requirements and hindrances to prayer. Gordon wrote 30 devotional books with titles starting as “Quiet Talks...” Hundreds of thousands of copies of his books have been printed over the years. Sadly all but one of them is out of print. “Quiet Talks on Prayer” is Gordon’s best book on prayer. You can read it on the web at http://www.posword.org/articles/gordsd/prayer00.shtml This book will change your prayer life.
Gordon, S D: “Quiet Talks on How to Pray,” now by Baker as “How to Pray” This is also an excellent book on prayer that should be read if at all possible.
Gordon, S D: “Prayer Changes Things” Not in print This book is made up of three sermons that Gordon preached in London. The last sermon also appears as a chapter in the book “Quiet Talks on the Tempter” by Gordon. Read it if you can. You will be blessed. It has some marvelous sections on what it means to fight Satan through prayer. Look for it soon on this web site.
Top McConkey, James: "The Surrendered Life" This wonderful book explains surrender as well as any book you will read. I found it by accident one day and have counted myself blessed ever since.
McConkey, James: "The Three-Fold Secret of the Holy Spirit" William Borden, friend of C.T. Studd and major activist in the student mission endeavors in the late 1800s carreid this book everwhere with him. There is good reason! It is wonderful. Your life will be vastly improved as a result.
Top Moody, D. L.: “Prevailing Prayer” This is an excellent book that significantly improved my own prayer life. It is available in print and on the web (http://www.ccel.org/)
Top Morneau, Roger: “Incredible Answers to Prayer,” etc.. Review & Herald Roger’s books on prayer are wonderful and have been a blessing to many.
Top *Murray, Andrew: “With Christ in the School of Prayer” Public Domain, but still in print. This is Murray’s best book on prayer. Divided into 31 chapters that are easily read on a daily basis, the book confidently asserts that God intends to answer every prayer, and then goes on to explain how to obtain answers. One of the best books on prayer, it is a must read. I have shared this book many times and found those reading find new freedom to pray and get answers! Other helpful books by Murray are The Secret of Intercession” and “The Believer’s Life of Prayer”.
Top *Muller, George (Pierson, A.T.): Muller of Bristol
This book is wonderful on George Muller's life, the orphanage that he founded and operated in Bristol England, and the principles that actuated his life. Sometimes people refer to present day Christian's as the "George Muller's of today," but close examination of his life demonstrates a level of commitment to God and the principles of God's word that are rarely if ever found in our day, due to any number of socalled expediencees. This book ranks with the great biographies ever written in my opinion when you consider the principles so clearly highlighted. Should be "must read" material.
*Muller, George (Steer, Roger): “George Muller: Delighted in God” Harold Shaw Publishers This is a must read biography of this champion of God. Müller was used of God to develop an orphanage that eventually cared for 2,000 orphans. Vast amounts of money were donated to Müller who only talked to God about his needs. Müller was also a major funder of other missions such as the China Inland Mission. Also strongly recommended as a “must read” is Steer’s “Spiritual Secrets of George Muller.”
Top Phillips, Frank: "His Robe Or Mine" (Related Study Guide) Pastor Phillips sent me this book as an unpublished manuscript in the early 1980s and I am sorry to say it stayed in my file cabinet for twenty years. He also sent me other resources as well, which are now available on the web at various places. Finally his daughter was located who granted permission to publish it on the web and in print. It is always given away for free, however donations are appreciated. You can find it in multiple languages at justifiedwalk.com.
Augsburger, Daniel: His Robe Or Mine Study Guide I wrote this study guide four or five years ago as a result of requests to lead a midweek prayer series on the book. Eventually I took my notes and integrated them into a study guide and made it available to others. The study guide has been profitably used in churches throughout North America and comes highly recommended. There is one section per chapter, and each section has an introduction, a small group activity, Bible study, and hundreds of supportive quotations. You can download a free copy here, or receive a printed copy for a cost. Sample chapter of study guide.
Ryle, J. C.: Holiness This is considered one of the best books ever written on holiness. I recently assigned this book as reading to a class studying the history of spirituality, and was pleased with the very positive response from the students. I wouldn't agree with everything he says-I have a different understanding of the after life for example-but what he says on holiness and the life that God wants us to live this side of heaven, is wonderful. You will be especially blessed in reading the chapter on assurance.
Phillips, Frank: "The Justified Walk" Teach Services This book is a somewhat faithful transcript of a week of prayer given at Andrews University in 1978. I invited Pastor Phillips to come and gave the series the title: The Justified Walk. Upon arriving, he told me that the title wasn't correct since he was teaching far more than justification! Unfortunately the title has remained with the series and now is attached to the ministry that promotes His Robe Or Mine—Justifiedwalk Ministries, and sometimes causes misunderstanding relative to his teachings. You can hear the audio from 1978 on path2prayer.com.
Top Smith, Hannah Whitall This book has brought thousands, if not millions of people into a saving relationships with the Lord Jesus Christ. One person who surrendered their life as a result of reading this book was C.T. Studd, Cambridge Seven leader and later missionary to China, India and Central Africa. She was a quaker, but loved the Lord and wrote this book at the request of her husband Robert Pearsall Smith and the challenge of a skeptic who compared Christians to people suffering headaches—hard to keep your head when it is hurting, but you can't afford to lose it.
Top Smith, Oswald: "The Revival We Need This is a marvelous book on revival and comes highly recommended by the much blessed revivalist in China and Korea, Jonathan Goforth, who muses in his forward that he wished he could give it to every Christian.
Top Spurgeon, Charles: “The Power of Prayer in a Believer’s Life” Emerald Books This marvelous book on prayer by the prince of preachers is a collection of sermons that he preached on the subject.
Top *Taylor, Mrs. Howard: “Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret” Moody Press This is the biography of Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission, by his daughter-in-law. A marvelous “prayer in action” book.
Taylor, Hudson: "Retrospect" Taylor wrote this book himself and shares many of the secrets he learned in his own journey with God. I have read selected chapters many times, and share many illustrations from his adventures in my seminars.
Top Tersteegen, Gerhard: Recluse in Demand This is the first of two volumes on Tersteegen's life written by Lillian Harvey. Mrs. Harvey felt called of God to write books on great Christians to encourage later generations. There is a reason, her books are life-changing! I had been vaguely aware of Tersteegen having noticed his poems in various books, and wondered who he was exactly. In reading this book I discovered a great man of God who was born in the last few years of the 1600s and was greatly used by God to bring blessing to the people of his era. Several of his sermons are here on path2prayer.com. More will be added.
Tersteegen, Gerhard: Sermons and Hymns The second volume of Harvcy's set on Tersteegen, this once consists of his sermons and hymns. Fortunately, God led various individuals to translate some of his sermons and hymns into English, of which a sample are gathered in this book. You will see things differently after reading Tersteegen.
Tersteegen, Gerhard: Spiritual Crumbs from the Master's Table Tersteegen's Spiritual Crumbs book consists of 8 sermons taken down as he preached extemporaneously. The book is exceedingly rare-I found a copy in England finally, but paid dearly for it-but there is a pdf of the book available on the net. I'm still reading, but the little bit I have read is proving a blessing. Tersteegen was a German Pietist who lived 1697-1769 and made a wonderful difference for God. Though he prefered to lead a reclusive lifestyle, he had such a connection with His Savior, that God brought thousands of people to him, necessitating his building a house that could accommodate 3 to 400 people, many of which would be there before he even awakened in the morning to listen to him. He was also banned from preaching for ten years like many others-Bunyan and Rutherford for example. Once again, present truth for his day was different than our day in that he didn't have as much understanding of the Bible, but what he understood he lived and God blessed him. Read with discernment.
Tersteegen (Jackson, Samuel): Life and Character of Gerhard Tersteegegn This is the firsts of the two books written or translated by Samuel Jackson on Tersteegen that I am aware of. To learn more about Tersteegen look at my notes on the Spiritual Crums book. Once again, be blessed, but also read with discernment.

*Thomas, Major Ian: "The Saving Life of Christ" I admit to finding this book at a thrift store in Lacombe, Alberta, for one loony, but the contents on the indwelling Christ were priceless. This book will open new vistas in your spiritual life! A Must read.
Top Trumbull, Charles: "Victory in Christ" This is the ever popular book that contains his much blessed sermon "The Life that Wins," which proved life-changing to Rosalind Goforth. Pastor Frank Phillips urged me to get this book years ago, and I still remember the thrill that came as I discovered that victory is Jesus. You can find the sermon and the complete book on this site.
Trumbull, Charles: "The Victorious Life" This series of sermons comes from a book compiling all the sermons for the Victorious Christ Conference held in Princeton, NJ in 1922. These sermons are not available anywhere else on the web to the best of my knowledge, and are distinct from his "Victory in Christ" book.
Top Torrey, R. A.: “How To Pray” Moody Press All of Torrey’s books are excellent and this one isn’t an exception.
Top White, E.: "Desire of Ages" It is too bad that so few people have read the Desire of Ages. Many well known evangelical preachers have read this book with great interest—at one time this book was one of the more read books in evangelical pastoral circles according to a survey—and will continue to do so, for it is one of the best written on the life of Christ.
White, E.: “Steps to Christ” Pacific Press This book is a very practical summation of how to become and remain a Christian. Thousands of copies are sold every year and many have found Jesus as their personal savior as a result of reading this little book.
*White, E.: “Power of Prayer” Teach Services This is a compilation of quotations on prayer. Highly recommended.
