S D Gordon (1859-1936) wrote more than 25 devotional books, most of which included the phrase "Quiet Talks" in the title. His first book sold more than 500,000 copies over 40 years.
Though S D Gordon never achieved any academic degrees, though he was never ordained as a pastor, he was a much in demand, much loved, speaker of the deeper things of God, and traveled extensively sharing profound spiritual truths in simple ways.
Born in Philadelphia, he served as the Assistant Secretary of the Philadelphia Young Men's Christian Association from 1884 to 1886. He later became the State Secretary for the YMCA in Ohio from 1886 to 1895. Following this service he spent four years traveling in the Orient and Europe on speaking tours.
His first book, Quiet Talks on Power, was published in 1901 by Fleming Revell when he was 42. Three years later he wrote Quiet Talks on Prayer. In 1906 he wrote quiet talk books on service and Jesus. For a period of time he wrote two books a year. He eventaully wrote 25 books.
