"There is no evidence of genuine repentance unless it works reformation. If he restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, confess his sins, and love God and his fellow men, the sinner may be sure that he has found peace with God. Such were the effects that in former years followed seasons of religious awakening. Revival, real revival, is the heart-cry of Christians all over the world. Instinctively, we know that God wants to bring revival into our personal lives, into our families, into our churches, and into our communities. Yet revival tarries in spite of the desires of God's children! The first revival in history occurred on the day of Pentecost, and scores of people took notice of God's work in the life of His people, and thousands joined them. Where before there had been timid efforts for God, and often mistakes were made, as a result of tarrying and waiting for the descent of the Holy Spirit, in a moment they became knowledgeable and fearless these early believers became effective, community-changing, witnesses. Down through the centuries since, as individuals here and there have joined others in seeking God, God has graciously honored their prayers, and taken control of them and their situations, empowered them to become knowledgeable and fearless witnesses, and time and again scores of people have been swept into a more abundant, fruit-filled, relationship with God as a result of the flood-tide movings of His Holy Spirit.
Sadly, in our day, as a result of complacency—we are all guilty!—lack of knowledge, questions whether God can do it again, many of us are going on without receiving the precious gift of the Holy Spirit, and the God-promised revival that is bound to accompany the Holy Spirit's descent. This would be akin to getting into our showers in the morning, turning on the faucet and not getting any water, and deciding it was okay to have a shower without water. If this went on for a few days, we would start smelling pretty bad and people would avoid us. I say this gently, but I think many of us Christians are rather "smelly" because of the lack of seeking and receiving this spiritual refreshing, and the people in the world around us are finding a "foul" aroma instead of a sweet one.
This reading comprises a letter included as an appendix in William Sprague's Lectures on Revival. I include it because it was written by a pastor who enjoyed many seasons of revival in his church and used all the right means. Accordingly you read how a church prepared for, enjoyed and sustained revival. I was blessed reading this and I think you will too. (Read Alvan Hyde's letter on the history of revival in his church)
"This firm confidence changed them in a single moment into happy people which they are to this day, and into their happiness they have since led may thousands of others through the memory and help which the heavenly grace once given to themselves, so many thousand times confirmed to them since then.

"They requested me to go out (to Evans' Mill) and preach. I consented; and the first time I preached I took this text: “Without holiness no man shall see the Lord.” The settlement turned out en masse; and the schoolhouse where they worshipped was filled to its utmost capacity. They could understand English well. I began by showing, what holiness is not. Under this head I took everything that they considered to be religion, and showed that it was not holiness at all. In the second place I showed what holiness is. I then showed, thirdly, what is intended by seeing the Lord; and then, why those that had no holiness could never see the Lord—why they could never be admitted to His presence, and be accepted of Him. I then concluded with such pointed remarks as were intended to make the subject go home. And it did go home by the power of the Holy Ghost. The sword of the Lord slew them on the right hand and on the left. In a very few days it was found that the whole settlement was under conviction; elders of the church and all were in the greatest consternation, feeling that they had no holiness. At their request I appointed a meeting for inquiry, to give instruction to inquirers. This was in their harvest time. All day Sunday the Spirit was working in our midst with great power. Old roots of bitterness were being pulled up and committed to the Lord to burn up with His purifying ﬁre. Many public confessions—sharp, clear and with a broken heart—were made, and yet more were made in private. Lurking sins that had been excused by easy consciences now assumed large proportions, as they were seen to stand across the way of hearty approach in to the divine presence." Robert Evans (The Welsh Revival)
"….Within a month he felt compelled to share this message of the reality of God and the possibility of complete forgiveness of sins with his home youth group at Moriah Loughor.
Summing up the message in 4 parts, Evan pressed home to the astonished church the need to...
1. Confess all known sin.
2. Make any known wrongs right.
3. Lay aside anything ‘doubtful’ in one's life.
3. Be quick to obey the Holy Spirit.
4. Confess Christ publicly.
By the end of the first week over 60 responded. By the end of the second week Evan had already started on a whirl-wind tour of the South Wales valleys with his team of 5 girl singers and within a year or so 100,000 converts were said to be added to the Welsh Church…."
"Now it does appear to me that we who are ministers, instead of looking abroad and searching for the fundamental difficulty beyond and out of ourselves, should see that whatever else may be an occasion of the great falling off and decline in revivals, our own spiritual state is certainly one, if not the primary and fundamental, reason of this decline. Want of personal holiness, unction, power in prayer, and in preaching the Word, the want of holy living and consecration to the work of self-denial, and energetic effort in the ministry, -these, no doubt, are the principal reasons why revivals are so few and far between, and of so superficial character at the present day." In 1858 in great cities and small towns all over America, people were assembling every night for prayer. In fact, you could travel by horse and buggy from Omaha, Nebraska to Washington, D.C. and expect to ﬁnd churches packed for prayer wherever you might stop for the night. This prayer movement began in the fall of 1857 and was known as the Layman’s Prayer Revival because there were businessmen (rather than ministers) who were leading.

Prime wrote a very helpful book on the prayer revival of 1857. I have added a few excerpts below.
Conscious of their utter helplessness, and feeling their absolute dependence upon God for power, they were compelled to tarry in prayer. But they knew that they were not tarrying in vain; for He had said: "Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it you." They used the name of Jesus, and put their supplications into His golden censer; their prayers ascended to the throne of the Father, authorized and accredited by the name of the only-begotten Son ; and Pentecost crowned their devotion. This is what the Apostles did, and this is what we must do. Prayer is the indispensable condition.
"When the beggar, at the door, has said, ‘Give me a morsel of bread!’ he does not immediately go away, but waits; and if he is left to stand long, he repeats his request, again and again, until he has really received what he desires. And although he be refused, yet he continues to beg, and does not move until he be attended to. So ought we also to act. "One thing is certain: the Evangelical Revival originated in prayer; and another thing is certain: the mighty force by which it was borne along came through prayer. I now ask—Is the time not ripe for a renewal of the covenant of prayer, with wider inclusions? Do not all things point in the direction, and proclaim the duty—the spiritual condition of the Churches, and the needs of a world providentially prepared and open in all its regions to the Gospel? Is not the call to prayer the loudest of God’s calls today? Oh, what things would happen were there union among God’s people everywhere in prayer at the end of this century, and at the beginning of the next! What a power of God would come upon and into the Churches! And how the mighty evils that abound, and that bafﬂe and defy us now, would be conquered and cast out, and the evangelization of the nations of the earth, in a little while, become an accomplished fact!"
Is there any reason why the Church today cannot everywhere equal the Church at Pentecost? I feel that this is a question that we ought to face with an open mind and an honest heart. What did the early Church have that we do not possess today? Nothing but the Holy Spirit, nothing but the power of God. Here I would suggest that one of the main secrets of success in the early Church lay in the fact that the early believers believed in UNCTION FROM ON HIGH, AND NOT ENTERTAINMENT FROM MEN. Our generation has been programmed to pursue happiness, wholeness, good feelings about ourselves, positive self-image, affirmation, and cures for our hurt feelings and damaged psyches. But God is not as interested in these ends as we are. He is more committed to making us holy than making us happy. And there is only one pathway to holiness--one road to genuine revival--and that is the pathway of humility or brokenness. Read more on Brokeness...

Pierson once said, ‘There has never been a spiritual awakening in any country or locality that did not begin in united prayer.’ Let me recount what God has done through concerted, united, sustained prayer.... What do we mean by extraordinary prayer? We share ordinary prayer in regular worship services, before meals, and the like. But when people are found getting up at six in the morning to pray, or having a half night of prayer until midnight, or giving up their lunch time to pray at noonday prayer meetings, that is extraordinary prayer. "Be in the will of God: Know that you are in it fully,—constantly. Perhaps you will have to spend hours on your knees, or upon your face before the throne. Never mind; wait! God will do great things for you, if you will yield to him, and co-operate with him. O play the man! Dwell in the clear light. I am hoping that God will make you a great blessing: but you must be a burning and shining light. The fire must come from heaven:—you have free access. Nelson says to me,- ' Remember, men must be saved First.' Be determined not to rest, unless souls get into clear liberty. We have a deal to say to them, but they must be saved. O what numbers among us are not clear in pardon! Let us agonize to get them into liberty. Maintain simplicity. If you spend several hours in prayer daily, you will see great things. I long for you. I do not cease to pray for you. You and your family are closely connected with my mercies: when I think of them, I think of you; so that as long as I have piety, I shall not forget you. I am resting on the atonement and intercession of Jesus. God gives himself to me. His Spirit is in me. O what rest is connected with an indwelling God! The abominations of the people around me fill me with grief. I can only find relief in the mercy and power of God, and in the merits of Christ. Many of our people are very ignorant of the way of faith. When the power of God is mightily upon them, they do not lay hold of what they want. "You and I often fail in our faith because of ignorance and besetting sin (Heb 12:1). There is the mighty ocean of power all around us, but for some reason we cannot tap it. It is like the electric current, which refuses to help us unless we have instruments precisely adapted to transmit the driving-power. Faith is absolutely necessary for the conveyance of God's power to meet the need and sin and sorrow of the world (He 11:6-). But when we find it deficient, when our heart believes not, when we find ourselves face to face with Jerichos that are closely shut, and with mountains that seem to mock the tiny levers with which we propose to move them, then we must turn to Christ and say: "I trust Thee for faith, I trust Thee to keep me trusting: I believe, help Thou mine unbelief." Three-Fold Secret of the Holy Spirit
THE ABSOLUTE, UNQUALIFIED SURRENDER OF OUR LIFE TO GOD, TO DO HIS WILL INSTEAD OF OUR OWN. Thus, 1. When we SURRENDER OUR SINS and believe, we RECEIVE the Holy Spirit; when we SURRENDER OUR LIVES and believe, we are FILLED with the Holy Spirit. 2. THE RECEIVING of the Spirit is God’s answer to repentance and faith; THE FULLNESS of the Spirit is God’s answer to SURRENDER and faith. 3. At CONVERSION the Spirit enters; at SURRENDER the Spirit, ALREADY ENTERED, takes FULL POSSESSION. Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled
"Christ has promised the gift of the Holy Spirit to His church, and the promise belongs to us as much as to the ﬁrst disciples. But like every other promise, it is given on conditions. There are many who believe and profess to claim the Lord’s promise; they talk about Christ and about the Holy Spirit, yet receive no beneﬁt. They do not surrender the soul to be guided and controlled by the divine agencies. We cannot use the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is to use us. Through the Spirit God works in His people “to will and to do of His good pleasure.” Phil. 2:13. But many will not submit to this. They want to manage themselves. This is why they do not receive the heavenly gift. Only to those who wait humbly upon God, who watch for His guidance and grace, is the Spirit given. The power of God awaits their demand and reception. This promised blessing, claimed by faith, brings all other blessings in its train. The Believer: The Temple of the Holy Spirit
"We must, however, not only yield up ourselves but also become, in deed and in truth, God's property, so that Jesus Christ, by His precious and Holy Spirit, may really take possession of us, according to the right He has most sacredly obtained over us, and henceforth be able to fix His abode with us. As soon as an individual. . . yields and devotes himself sincerely and to the best of his knowledge to Christ--from that hour, from that moment, the Holy Spirit takes possession of such a heart to work upon it by His gracious operation. He prepares it for a holy temple of God, and carries this on continually during the whole course of our lives. By increasing and daily progress in sanctification and the renewing of the heart, He takes ever closer and more complete possession of the hearts of believers, whilst delivering them more and more, by His gracious operation, from all evil, and making them partakers of the divine nature." Experiencing the Holy Spirit
“When the (Holy Pentecostal Spirit) enters into the heart, he fills it entirely, so that the world finds no more room or place in it, because this guest, makes himself sole Lord and Master of it. The first disciples and believers were so entirely taken possession of by this blissful dominion of the Pentecostal Spirit, that they were no longer master of their own tongues or any other member, but were compelled as it were, to speak, even as the Spirit gave them utterance. They could no longer speak, according to their own judgment, knowledge, and learning. No! they were constrained to do and speak as the Holy Spirit would have them. Thus it fares with everyone, with whom the Holy Spirit takes up his residence; he then experiences the blissful dominion of our Lord Jesus Christ in his heart...." The Necessity of the Holy Spirit

Duncan Campell was a Scottish preacher who played a key role in that took place in the Scottish Hebrides, sometimes also referred to as the Lewis Awakening. He began walking witih God through the work of "pilgrims" of the Faith Mission in 1913. He later served as a pastor in other churches, but eventually returned to the Faith Mission 1949, working in Skye. Eventually Cambpell accepted a call to come to the Hebrides Islands, a call prompted by the prayers of two gaelic-speaking sisters in their 80s who had been praying for revival. Almost immediately upon arriving, God began working in a special way, and scores of people experienced spiritual renewal. As a result of his personal experience with these revival experiences, he began to speak much on the subject of revival. In later life he led a training school for the Faith Mission in Edinburgh. He was known as a man of much prayer. Duncan Campbell was outspoken on two aspects of the Holy Spirit during his ministry that caused many to come and hear him, and drove others away. The first aspect being that a true revival was a move of God that affected not only church members but the surrounding community in a way that was visible to all parties concerned (work stopping, bars closing, crime ceasing, etc). The second aspect of God he preached on was the definite experience of the baptism of the Holy Ghost subsequent to conversion, that was often seen to transform a pastor's efforts from meager to community-changing. Since 1980, Nancy has served on the staff of Life Action Ministries, a revival ministry, based in Niles, Michigan. Until 2001, she served as the Director Women's Ministries and as the editor of Spirit of Revival magazine. Charles Finney Famed American Revivalist (1792-1875)
Charles Gradison Finney (August 29, 1792 – August 16, 1875), often called "America's foremost revivalist," was a major leader of the Second Great Awakening in America, which had a great impact on the social history of the United States. Born in Warren, Connecticut as the youngest of seven children, Finney had humble beginnings. His parents were farmers and Finney himself never attended college. However, his six foot two inch stature, piercing blue eyes, musical skill, and leadership abilities gained him good standing in his community. He studied as an apprentice to become a lawyer, but after a dramatic conversion experience in Adams, New York at the age of 29, Finney became a minister in the Presbyterian Church. Finney moved to New York City in 1832 where he pastored the Free Presbyterian Chatham Street Chapel and later founded and pastored the Broadway Tabernacle, known today as Broadway United Church of Christ. Finney's logical, clear presentation of his Gospel message reached thousands and promised renewing power and the love of Jesus. Some historians estimate his preaching led to the conversion of over 500,000 people.
Finney was known for his innovations in preaching and conducting religious meetings, such as allowing women to pray in public and the development of the "anxious bench," a place where those considering becoming Christians could come to receive prayer. Finney was also known for his use of extemporaneous preaching. In addition to being a successful Christian evangelist, Finney was involved with the abolitionist movement and frequently denounced slavery from the pulpit. Beginning in the 1830s, he denied communion to slaveholders in his churches. Prior to his conversion, he had been (as most lawyers of the time were) a Freemason, but became a staunch opponent of Masonry, and wrote an extensive book attacking it, entitled "The Character, Claims, and Practical Workings of Freemasonry".
In 1835, he moved to Ohio where he would become a professor, and later President of Oberlin College from 1851 – 1866. Oberlin was a major cultivation ground for the early movement to end slavery, and among the first American colleges to coeducate blacks and women with white men.

The Reverend Jonathan Goforth was the ï¬rst Canadian Presbyterian missionary to China with the Canadian Presbyterian Mission, with his wife, Rosalind (Bell-Smith) Goforth. John Greenfield, the son of a pioneer minister who came to the United States from Denmark, was a Moravian pastor, who was widely known for his zeal in evangelism and his knowledge of Moravian hymns. He wrote this "must read" book to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Moravian Revival (August 13, 1727). This book recounts the wonderful way that God brought the contentious Moravians into unity and the power of the Holy Spirit through prayer and the personal intervention of their leader Count Nicholas Zinzendorf.
"We must be men, strangers to no legitimate interest and pursuit. We must create an atmosphere in which the beautiful as well as the good and the true will ﬁnd their healthy growth, in and for God. But, as had been well said, “the natural man must be changed into a spiritual man, before the spiritual man can afford to be natural.” A Christianity of that type, self-renouncing, loving, pure, bold, and beautiful, will not be without its attraction and inﬂuence upon the world, especially upon the young."
J. Edwin Orr (January 15, 1912-April 1987) was a Baptist minister, lecturer and author. Of him, Billy Graham wrote: “Dr. J. Edwin Orr, in my opinion, is one of the greatest authorities on the history of religious revivals in the Protestant world. He was influential in the Campus Crusade for Christ and was one of the five original board members of that organization. Arthur Pierson (March 6, 1837 - June 3, 1911) was an American Presbyterian pastor, early fundamentalist leader, and writer who preached over 13,000 sermons, wrote over ﬁfty books, and gave Bible lectures as part of a transatlantic preaching ministry that made him famous in Scotland and England. He was a friend of D. L. Moody, George Mller (whose biography ‘George Müller of Bristol’ he wrote), Adoniram Judson Gordon, and C. H. Spurgeon, whom he succeeded in the pulpit of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, London, from 1891 to 1893. Throughout his career, Pierson ﬁlled several pulpit positions around the world as an urban pastor who cared passionately for the poor.—Wiki

William Buell Sprague (1795-1876) was an American Congregational and Presbyterian clergyman and compiler of Annals of the American Pulpit (nine volumes, 1857–1869), a comprehensive biographical dictionary of the leading American Protestant Christian ministers who died before 1850, and other books. His Lectures on Revival is considered one of the best books on revival (sharing top rank with Charles Finney's book of the same title). He was also a collector of documents and tracts, and was the first to collect all the autographs of the signers of the American Declaration of Independence.
