Overcoming Temptation

Overcoming Sin, Transformation &
More Abundant Victorious Living

"I can do ALL things through Christ!"

Daily Overcoming Sin, Victory & Fighting Temptation Quote

Christian Courage and Peace Quote

Directory for Overcoming Temptation

Overcoming temptation, and achieving victory should be the birthright of every Christian, not a birth defect!
but few experience victory and the more abundant life that God intends? Why? Because few understand the challenges faced in overcoming sin and fighting temptation, most have a limited understanding of the divine provisions provided for that overcoming, and few understand the process whereby God brings about transformation. Just using the word transformation makes many people uncomfortable. The same is true of Peter's call to believers to be holy. But God desire His children to experience more abundant, overcoming lives, and His provision for their transformation is without question. You will learn about overcoming sin and understanding temptation in the information and links found on this page. Also look for help in the practical Christianity section.

Overcoming Temptation & Experiencing Victory

Are you interested in experiencing God's transforming power? Be encouraged, you have neither the wisdom or the strength to overcome—you are utterly unable; But Jesus has both! He said, "Without Me ye can do nothing," but with Him you can do ALL things.

The following materials will help you in that quest.

Sin

J. C. Ryle: "Sin" (Taken from his book Holiness)

This is the first chapter of his book and is foundational everything appearing in later chapters. I have assigned this book as reading to the students in my classes because of the clear scriptural teaching provided on the subject on sin. I don't agree with everything he says, so read with discernment. He lived in the 1800s. Holiness was a reaction to what he viewed as very passive and inadequate understandings of victory being promoted by the holiness movements of his time.

J C Ryle: Christ is All

"Alas, there are many of the Lord’s people who live far below their privileges! There are many truly Christian souls who rob themselves of their own peace and forsake their own mercies. There are many who insensibly join their own faith, or the work of the Spirit in their own hearts, to Christ, and so miss the fulness of Gospel peace. There are many who make little progress in their pursuit of holiness, and shine with a very dim light. And why is all this? Simply because in nineteen cases out of twenty men do not make Christ all in all. Now I call on every reader of this paper who is a believer, I beseech him for his own sake, to make sure that Christ is really and thoroughly his all in all. Beware of allowing yourself to mingle anything of your own with Christ." Read more of Ryle's Christ is All...

Salvation

J. C. Ryle

J. C. Ryle: Assurance (From Holiness)

"None are so likely to maintain a watchful guard over hearts and lives as those who know the comfort of living in near communion with God. They feel their privilege, and will fear losing it. They will dread falling from their high estate, and marring their own comforts, by bringing clouds between themselves and Christ. He that goes on a journey with little money about him takes little thought of danger, and cares little how late he travels. He, on the contrary, that carries gold and jewels will be a cautious traveller. He will look well to his roads, his house, and his company, and run no risks. The fixed stars are those that tremble most. The man that most fully enjoys the light of God’s reconciled countenance, will be a man tremblingly afraid of losing its blessed consolations, and jealously fearful of doing anything to grieve the Holy Ghost." Spiritual Growth

Mead MacGuire: Laws of Growth and Sanctification

"When a man receives Christ by faith, he is “as a child born unto the kingdom of God.” In the Scriptures he is spoken of as a “babe in Christ.” Means have been provided by which he is to grow up into the full stature of manhood in Christ. This does not mean that he is growing into holiness, but rather in holiness. “The believer does not get disentangled from the sin gradually. He breaks with it in Christ once for all; he is placed by a decisive act of the will in the sphere of perfect holiness; and it is within it that the gradual renewing of the personal life goes forward. This second gospel paradox, sanctiï¬ï¿½cation by faith, rests on the ï¬ï¿½rst, justiï¬ï¿½cation by faith.” - The Way of Deliverance, page 10. As we seek to appropriate day by day the blessings that are in Christ for us, there is a constant growth and expansion of the spiritual powers. The capacity to see and feel and understand the things of God is constantly increased...." Read more of Mead MacGuire's Law of Growth

J. C. Ryle: Spiritual Growth (From Holiness)

"When I speak of “growth in grace” I only mean increase in the degree, size, strength, vigour, and power of the graces which the Holy Spirit plants in a believer’s heart. I hold that every one of those graces admits of growth, progress, and increase. I hold that repentance, faith, hope, love, humility, zeal, courage, and the like, may be little or great, strong or weak, vigorous or feeble, and may vary greatly in the same man at different periods of his life. When I speak of a man “growing in grace,” I mean simply this—that1 his sense of sin is becoming deeper, his faith stronger, his hope brighter, his love more extensive, his spiritual-mindedness more marked. He feels more of the power of godliness in his own heart. He manifests more of it in his life. He is going on from strength to strength, from faith to faith, and from grace to grace. I leave it to others to describe such a man’s condition by any words they please. For myself I think the truest and best account of him is this—he is “growing in grace.” Read More

Harriet Beecher Stowe: How To Live On Christ

" How, then, shall a Christian bear fruit? By efforts and struggles to obtain that which is freely given; by meditations on watchfulness, on prayer, on action, on temptation, and on dangers? No, there must be a full concentration of the thoughts and affections on Christ; a complete surrender of the whole being to him; a constant looking to him for grace. Christians in whom these dispositions are once firmly fixed, go on calmly as the sleeping infant borne in the arms of its mother. Christ reminds them of every duty in its time and place—reproves them for every error—counsels them in every difficulty, excites them to every needful activity. In spiritual, as in temporal matters, they take no thought for the morrow—for they know that Christ will be as accessible tomorrow as to-day, and that time imposes no barrier on his love. ..." E. White: Growing Up Into Christ

"The plants and flowers grow not by their own care or anxiety or effort, but by receiving that which God has furnished to minister to their life. The child cannot, by any anxiety or power of its own, add to its stature. No more can you, by anxiety or effort of yourself, secure spiritual growth. The plant, the child, grows by receiving from its surroundings that which ministers to its life --air, sunshine, and food. What these gifts of nature are to animal and plant, such is Christ to those who trust in Him. He is their "everlasting light," "a sun and shield." Isaiah 60:19; Psalm 84:11...." Read More

E. White: Spiritual Growth In Grace

"Before the believer is held out the wonderful possibility of being like Christ, obedient to all the principles of the law. But of himself man is utterly unable to reach this condition. The holiness that God’s word declares he must have before he can be saved is the result of the working of divine grace as he bows in submission to the discipline and restraining influences of the Spirit of truth. Man’s obedience can be made perfect only by the incense of Christ’s righteousness, which ï¬ï¿½lls with divine fragrance every act of obedience. The part of the Christian is to persevere in overcoming every fault. Constantly he is to pray to the Saviour to heal the disorders of his sin-sick soul. He has not the wisdom or the strength to overcome; these belong to the Lord, and He bestows them on those who in humiliation and contrition seek Him for help...." Read More

Dying to Self

Dying to self is an important, but often misunderstood concept in Christian growth. It isn't something we can do for ourselves, but it is necessary just the same, and was mandated by Jesus in his conversation with the rich young ruler who wondered what he lacked to inherit eternal life. A variety of thoughts, quotations, and books will be featured here.

Surrender and "dying to self" speak of a similar, but not identical thing, in many cases an ongoing process. Surrender speaks of a decision or choice for Christ and following Him, and can be progressive as a person increasingly surrenders. Read more in the introductory section.

Sanctification & Christian Perfection

I have in my possession a book that reviews five different understandings of sanctification, including the Wesley, Reformed, Pentecostal, Keswick and Augustinian-Dispensational Perspective. Needless to say numerous books have been written on the subject, the most famous, perhaps being Wesley's Plain Account of Christian Perfection. Where lies the truth on this subject? What is meant by perfection? Is such a thing even possible? I believe God can bring about a sanctifying work of perfection through His power, and I will add articles and chapters on the subject from time to time.

Dangers of the Victorious Life

Many dangers come with this life. As a result several writers included chapters on the dangers and how to meet them. Here are four such chapters compiled on one page.

Unpardonable Sin (Sinning Against the Holy Spirit)

Is there such a thing as a sin that cannot be pardoned? What does it mean to sin against the Holy Spirit? This question is often raised by new believers who fear they have too greviously sinned against God to be pardoned. If a person worries about committing such a sin, it is obvious such a sin was not committed. As the following suggests, the unpardonable sin is the sin against the Holy Spirit, whcih occurs when one willfully chooses to go against the clear, convicting promptings of God's Spirit, until the Spirit no longer seeks to communicate.

E. White: The Unpardonable Sin

"It is not God that blinds the eyes of men or hardens their hearts. He sends them light to correct their errors, and to lead them in safe paths; it is by the rejection of this light that the eyes are blinded and the heart hardened. Often the process is gradual, and almost imperceptible. Light comes to the soul through God’s word, through His servants, or by the direct agency of His Spirit; but when one ray of light is disregarded, there is a partial benumbing of the spiritual perceptions, and the second revealing of light is less clearly discerned. So the darkness increases, until it is night in the soul. Thus it had been with these Jewish leaders. They were convinced that a divine power attended Christ, but in order to resist the truth, they attributed the work of the Holy Spirit to Satan. In doing this they deliberately chose deception; they yielded themselves to Satan, and henceforth they were controlled by his power." Read more about the unpardonable sin...

Frank Phillips:

Pastor Frank Phillips served the church he loved for over 45 years in a variety of pastoral and leadership positions. Upon retiring Pastor Phillips devoted the next ten years to sharing the message of righteousness by faith that had been so life-changing for him. In these revivals his wife Dorothy was his constant companion. He was a popular speaker and many individuals experienced new life as a result. Most of the time Pastor Phillips held one-week revivals that typically consisted of nine to ten sessions. Fortunately many of these revivals were recorded and thus preserved for our use. I became personally acquainted with Pastor Phillips in 1978 when I invited him to hold a week of prayer at Andrews University. From that time we began corresponding and sharing varioius studies back and forth. Over the years he sent me tapes of his series, as well as a manuscript that he had not been able to publish.

Hudson Taylor

The Exchanged Life comes from the book Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret by Dr. and Mrs. Howard Taylor. In this oft-quoted chapter they reference a letter which Hudson Taylor sent to his sister describing the wonderful things God was doing in his life. From this time, where Hudson Taylor had previoiusly been a struggling Christian, he was now enjoy victory and peace like he had always longed for, and, WAS a happy Christian! Read the "Exchanged Life" from the Taylors' book, then read the introduction and the key "Holiness" chapter from Christ is All by Henry Law, from which the quotation that played such an important role was quoted.

Remember to read Law's chapter as well (below)

In his letter, Hudson Taylor mentions receiving a letter from a friend by the name of "Macarthy" that contained life-changing words regarding what Jesus' indwelling meant so far as holiness was concerned. Loving the old books of these great Christians, I've been busily searching to find the book quoted, and for a time thought it was in the book Christ is all by Stephen Tyng (that's what is usually mentioned around the web). Obtaining Tyng's Christ is All finally, I was disappointed to NOT find the quotation. Then I used "Google books" and searched for a few key words, and FOUND the source of the quotation: Christ is All: The Pentateuch by Henry Law. Not only was Taylor impacted by this quotation, but I'm guessing Andrew Murray must have read Law's book and quoted from it as well. I've enclosed the "Holiness" chapter (#8) from Law's book. Law, by the way, is considered one of the most Christ-centered authors of past times. Read and enjoy!

Hudson Tayor later sent Harriet Beecher Stowe's How To Live On Christ to all the CIM missionaries. The identity of this book has been a mystery for many years. Using Google books I discovered the quoted text in an introduction that Stowe wrote for a book by Christopher Dean. I am fairly certain the introduction to Dean's book formed the basis of the booklet which Taylor sent out since some of the reading is so similar to the wording he used in describing his experience. Read the introduction for yourself.
