Need and Personality of the Holy Spirit

I    Introduction
A    Privilege to be here.

B    The Power of the Spirit is REAL!

1    But the Spirit is very real!
a    D. L. Moody
i    "It was in the fall of 1871. I had been very anxious to have a large Sunday school and a large congregation, but there were few conversions. I remember I used to take a pride in having the largest congregation in Chicago on a Sunday night. Two godly women used to come to hear me. One of them came to me one night after I had preached very satisfactorily, as I thought. I fancied she was going to congratulate me on my success; but she said, " We are praying for you." I wondered if I had made some blunder that they talked in that way. Next Sunday night they were there again, evidently in prayer while I was preaching. One of them said, " We are still praying for you." I could not understand it, and said: "Praying for me! Why don't you pray for the people? I am all right." "Ah!" they said, "you are not all right; you have not got power, there is something lacking, but God can qualify you." I did not like it at first, but I got to thinking it over, and after a little time I began to feel a desire to have what they were praying for. They continued to pray for me, and the result was that at the end of three months God sent this blessing on me. In describing the coming and effect of that blessing Mr. Moody says:
The blessing came upon me suddenly like a flash of lightning. For months I had been hungering and thirsting for power in service. I had come to that point that I think I would have died if I had not got it. I remember I was walking the streets of New York. I had no more heart in the business I was about than if I had not belonged to the world at all. Right there, on the street, the power of God seemed to come upon me so wonderfully that I had to ask God to stay his hand. I was filled with a sense of God's goodness, and felt as though I could take the whole world to my heart. I took the old sermon I had preached before without any power; it was the same old truth, but there was a new power. Many were impressed and converted. This happened years after I was converted myself." Brooks p. SS 132
b    Samuel Chadwick
ii    "When it came I could not explain what had happened, but I was aware of things unspeakable and full of glory. Some results were immediate. There came into my soul a deep peace, a thrilling joy, and a new sense of power. My mind was quickened. I felt that I had received a new faculty of understanding. Every power was vitalized. My bodily powers were quickened. There was a new sense of spring and vitality, a new power of endurance, and a strong man's exhilaration in big things. Things began to happen." Samuel Chadwick

C    Notice what happened in the days of Jesus and immediately following:

2    Jesus worked in great power.
c    "And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them. Great multitudes followed Him—from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan." Matt. 4:23-25
d    "Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region." Luke 4:14
3    Jesus promised power.
e    John 14:12 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father."
f    “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:8
4    Early Church received power.
g    Acts 2:1-4 The Spirit descended with power!
iii    An inward Jesus who would be constantly with them.
iv    Complete transformation.
v    It shed the love of God in their hearts.
vi    It brought a fearless, holy boldness for Christ.
vii    It brought a new understanding of the Scriptures.
viii    It brought a new power to bless others.
5    But note it isn't automatic.
h    “'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?' So they said to him, 'We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.'" Acts 19:2

D    The Great Need is Spirit-filled people!

6    God wants each of us to be baptized by the Holy Spirit!
i    E. White
ix    “Nothing but the baptism of the Holy Spirit can bring up the church to its right position, and prepare the people of God for the fast approaching conflict."—E. White, Letter 15, 1889
x    "This promised blessing, if claimed by faith, would bring all other blessings in its train, and it is to be given liberally to the people of God." AUCR, April 1, 1898
xi     "He who is endowed with the Holy Spirit has great capacities of heart and intellect, with strength of will and purpose that is unconquerable." AUCR, April 1, 1898
xii    "We should pray as earnestly for the descent of the Holy Spirit as the disciples prayed on the day of Pentecost. If they needed it at that time, we need it more today." AUCR, April 1, 1898
xiii    "The promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit is not comprehended as it should be; the privileges to be enjoyed through its acceptance are not appreciated as they might be. God desires that His church should lay hold by faith upon His promises, and ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to help them in every place. He assures us that He is more willing to give the Holy Spirit to those that ask Him, than parents are to give good gifts unto their children. Since it is possible for every one to have the heavenly unction, "ye need not that any man teach you," and there is no excuse for shunning responsibilities; no duty should be unwelcome, no obligation evaded. Christ Himself is the renewing power, working in and through every soldier by the agency of the Holy Spirit. The efficiency of the Spirit of God will make effective the labours of all who are willing to submit to His guidance." AUCR, April 1, 1898
xiv    “The Holy Spirit must be the living agency to convince of sin. The divine agent presents to the speaker the benefits of the sacrifice made upon the cross; and as the truth is brought in contact with the souls present, Christ wins them to himself, and works to transform their nature.”
xv    “Many who are explaining the Scriptures to others have not conscientiously and entirely surrendered mind and heart and life to the control of the Holy Spirit.”
xvi    “Now we must pray as never before for the Holy Spirit to be more abundantly bestowed upon us, and we must look for its sanctifying influence to come upon the workers, that the people for whom they labor may know that they have been with Jesus and learned of him.” Home Missionary, November 1, 1893
xvii    “The Holy Spirit is to be presented in every discourse. What wonderful statements Christ has made concerning His representative to the world! This is the theme of encouragement to be kept before the people. In comprehending the office of the Holy Spirit, we shall bring all blessings to ourselves. He will make us complete in Christ.” Manuscript 8, 1898
xviii    “The promised outpouring of God's life-giving Spirit has been and is still the great hope of God's people. It is the hope and glory of Zion. In this time of spiritual declension God's ministry is to stand in dignity, efficiency, and power.” Manuscript 14, 1901”
xix    “The more we discover our real need, our real poverty, the more we desire the gift of the Holy Spirit. . . . It is because we do not see our need, do not realize our poverty, that we do not pour forth earnest entreaties, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith for the bestowal of the blessing.” Manuscript 3, 1892
xx    “The Christian's life is not a modification or improvement of the old, but a transformation of nature. There is a death to self and sin, and a new life altogether. This change can be brought about only by the effectual working of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit that makes effectual what has been wrought out by the world's Redeemer. It is by the Spirit that the heart is made pure. Through the Spirit the believer becomes a partaker of the divine nature. Christ has given His Spirit as a divine power to overcome all hereditary and cultivated tendencies to evil, and to impress His own character upon His church.” Faith I Live By, p. 55
j    Wesley Duewel
xxi    “Our generation will come to God only when it sees new demonstrations of God’s reality, presence, and power in His people individually and as a church.”
xxii    “Although the church can be found in more places than ever before, it is largely asleep—lukewarm, lifeless, powerless.
xxiii    “The church will be ablaze for God only when you and I are ablaze for him.”
xxiv    “The church will be as mighty for God as you and I are mighty for Him.”—Wesley Duewel, More God; More Power
k    Andrew Murray
xxv    “The supreme need of the Christian life is to receive the Holy Spirit, and when we have it, to be conscious of the fact and live in harmony with it.”
xxvi    “Only when believers are prepared to acknowledge the defective and sinful character of their spiritual condition, that the preaching of the full blessing of Pentecost will find an entrance into their hearts."
xxvii    Only when the discovery is made that they are not standing in a right attitude towards the Holy Spirit, that they have only His preparatory operations, but do not yet know and honour Him in His ining, that the way to something higher will ever be open or even be desired.”—Andrew Murray, Full Blessing of Pentecost
xxviii    “The grand result was achieved simply and only because the first Christian Church was filled with the Spirit. The members gave themselves wholly to the Lord. They allowed themselves to be filled and consecrated, governed and used only by Him. They yielded themselves to Him as instruments of His power. He dwelt in them and wrought in them all His wondrous deeds.”—Andrew Murray, Full Blessing of Pentecost, p. 28
l    Samuel Chadwick
xxix    “The measure of our power is in the energy of the Holy Spirit, working in us and through us. All fullness of life, all resources of vitality, all certainty of assurance, all victory over sin and the flesh, all prevailing power in prayer, all certitude of glory --all and everything is in the Indwelling Presence and Power of the Holy Spirit of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”—Samuel Chadwick, Way to Pentecost, p. 21

E    We need to seek after the Holy Spirit

7    “Seasons of prayer should be held for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.” Letter 292, 1907
8    “Could there be a convocation of all the churches on earth, the object of their united cry should be for the Holy Spirit. When we have that, Christ our sufficiency is ever present, we shall have every want supplied. We shall have the mind of Christ.” Letter 114, 1894
9    “The promise of the Holy Spirit is not limited to any age or to any race. Christ declared that the divine influence of His Spirit was to be with His followers unto the end. From the Day of Pentecost to the present time, the Comforter has been sent to all who have yielded themselves fully to the Lord and to His service. To all who have accepted Christ as a personal Saviour, the Holy Spirit has come as a counselor, sanctifier, guide, and witness.” Acts of the Apostles, p. 49

F    Notice what they did in the Upper Room

10    Acts 1:13,14 “And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying.... These all continued in one accord in prayer and supplication....”
11    “The first disciples obtained the baptism on their knees; on their knees they obtained it for others. It will be on our knees also that the full blessing will be won today.” Andrew Murray, Full Blessing of Pentecost, p. 28
12    “For the baptism of the Holy Spirit, every worker should be breathing out his prayers to God. Companies should be gathered together to call upon God for special help, for heavenly wisdom, that the people of God may know how to plan and devise and execute the work. Especially should men pray that the Lord will choose his agents, and baptize his missionaries with the Holy Spirit.” Home Missionary, November 1, 1893

II    Group Prayer!

G    For forgiveness and unity.

H    Great desire of Spirit.

I    For manifestation of Spirit.

III    What is the Holy Spirit?

J    Introduction:What is the Holy Spirit

Matt. 12:31,32

L    What are the attributes of the Spirit

22    Is referred to as God.
ss    "But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” Acts. 5:3,4

yy    "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life." John 6:63
25    Is omnipresent.
zz    "Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea," Ps. 139:7-9

hhh    "Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied." Acts 9:31

jjj    "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?" Heb. 9:14
31    A few Quotations
kkk    “Let me take you to the baptismal font, where believers put on the name of the Lord Jesus, and you shall hear me pronounce the solemn words, “I baptize thee in the name,”—mark, “in the name,” not names—”of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” Every one who is baptized according to the true form laid down in Scripture, must be a Trinitarian....” Charles Spurgeon
lll    We need to realize that the Holy Spirit, who is as much a person as God is a person, is walking through these grounds.—E. White, Manuscript, 66, 1899 (from talk given to students at Avondale)
mmm    “The Holy Spirit is the Comforter, in Christ's name. He personifies Christ, yet is a distinct personality. We may have the Holy Spirit if we ask for it and make it habit to turn to and trust in God rather than in any finite human agent who may make mistakes.” Manuscript Releases, 20, p. 324
nnn    “There are three living persons of the heavenly trio; in the name of these three great powers --the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit--those who receive Christ by living faith are baptized, and these powers will co-operate with the obedient subjects of heaven in their efforts to live the new life in Christ.”—Special Testimonies, Series B, No. 7, pp. 62, 63. (1905)  Evangelism, p. 615
ooo    Keep yourselves where the three great powers of heaven--the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit--can be your efficiency. These powers work with the one who gives himself unreservedly to God. The strength of heaven is at the command of God's believing ones. The man who makes God his trust is barricaded by an impregnable wall.  Heaveny Places, p. 176
ppp    The Godhead was stirred with pity for the race, and the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit gave themselves to the working out of the plan of redemption.--Counsels on Health, p. 222
qqq    Those who proclaim the third angel's message must put on the whole armor of God, that they may stand boldly at their post, in the face of detraction and falsehood, fighting the good fight of faith, resisting the enemy with the word, "It is written." Keep yourselves where the three great powers of heaven, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, can be your efficiency. These powers work with the one who gives himself unreservedly to God. The strength of heaven is at the command of God's believing ones. The man who takes God as his trust is barricaded by an impregnable wall.--The Southern Watchman, Feb. 23, 1904, p. 122
rrr    Our sanctification is the work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is the fulfilment of the covenant that God has made with those who bind themselves up with Him, to stand with Him, with His Son, and with His Spirit in holy fellowship. Have you been born again? Have you become a new being in Christ Jesus? Then co-operate with the three great powers of heaven who are working in your behalf. Doing this you will reveal to the world the principles of righteousness.--The Signs of the Times, June 19, 1901
sss    The eternal heavenly dignitaries--God, and Christ, and the Holy Spirit--arming them [the disciples] with more than mortal energy, . . . would advance with them to the work and convince the world of sin.--Evangelism, p. 616
ttt    Sin could be resisted and overcome only through the mighty agency of the Third Person of the Godhead, who would come with no modified energy, but in the fullness of divine power. It is the Spirit that makes effectual what has been wrought out by the world's Redeemer. It is by the Spirit that the heart is made pure. Through the Spirit the believer becomes a partaker of the divine nature. Christ has given His Spirit as a divine power to overcome all hereditary and cultivated tendencies to evil, and to impress His own character upon His church.  Desire of Ages, p. 671
uuu    The Holy Spirit has a personality, else He could not bear witness to our spirits and with our spirits that we are the children of God. He must also be a divine person, else He could not search out the secrets which lie hidden in the mind of God. "For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God."--Manuscript 20, 1906

IV    What is the work of the Spirit

N    Holy Spirit regenerates the believer

32    "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." John 3:6
33    "Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit." 1 Cor. 12:3
34    “It is the Holy Spirit who imparts the first germ of life, convincing us of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment to come. And is it not the Holy Spirit, who, after that flame is kindled, still fans it with the breath of his mouth and keeps it alive? Its author is its preserver.” Charles Spurgeon
35    “The Spirit was to be given as a regenerating agent, and without this the sacrifice of Christ would have been of no avail. The power of evil had been strengthening for centuries, and the submission of men to this satanic captivity was amazing. Sin could be resisted and overcome only through the mighty agency of the Third Person of the Godhead, who would come with no modified energy, but in the fullness of divine power. It is the Spirit that makes effectual what has been wrought out by the world's Redeemer. It is by the Spirit that the heart is made pure. Through the Spirit the believer becomes a partaker of the divine nature. Christ has given His Spirit as a divine power to overcome all hereditary and cultivated tendencies to evil, and to impress His own character upon His church.” Desire of Ages, p. 671
36    “The Holy Spirit was promised to be with those who were wrestling for victory, in demonstration of all mightiness, endowing the human agent with supernatural powers, and instructing the ignorant in the mysteries of the kingdom of God. That the Holy Spirit is to be the grand helper, is a wonderful promise. Of what avail would it have been to us that the only begotten Son of God had humbled Himself, endured the temptations of the wily foe, and wrestled with him during His entire life on earth, and died the Just for the unjust that humanity might not perish, if the Spirit had not been given as a constant, working, regenerating agent to make effectual in our cases what has been wrought out by the world's Redeemer?” 3Selected Messages, p. 137.

O    Holy Spirit liberates from sin.

37    "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death." Rom. 8:2
38    "And made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith." Acts. 15:9

P    Holy Spirit sanctifies

39    "...that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit." Rom. 15:16
40    Eph. 1:13 “...in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise....”
41    "But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, ...." 2Thess. 2:13
42    "Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied." 1 Pet. 1:2
43    “The Saviour declared. If men are willing to be molded, there will be brought about a sanctification of the whole being. The Spirit will take the things of God and stamp them on the soul. By His power the way of life will be made so plain that none need err therein.” Acts of the Apostles, p. 52.
44    Only when Jesus descended into them by the Holy Spirit did they undergo a complete change.... From that moment onwards they were animated by the spirit of the meek and lowly Jesus. This, in very truth, is still the only way to a real sanctification, to a life that actually overcomes sin.” Andrew Murray, Blessing of Pentecost, p. 2

Q    Holy Spirit fills the believer.

45    "And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit," Eph. 5:18
46    "But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words." Acts 2:14
47    "And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions." Joel 2:28,29
48    "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them." Ezek 36:27

R    Holy Spirit empowers.

49    "And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, ...." Ex. 31:3
50    "Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses." Deut. 34:9
51    "For he (John the Baptist) will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb." Luke 1:15

S    Holy Spirit guides into truth.

52     "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." John 14:26
53    "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come." John 16:13
54    “The Spirit-filled know. They have knowledge that does not depend upon intellectual capacity, scholarly training, or even on experience, and their certainty is the secret of their power. They have knowledge that comes not of flesh and blood, but from the Spirit Who knows the deep things of God, for He is Himself God. And the Spirit not only reveals the deep things of God, but gives also illumination for all the practical affairs of life.”—Samuel Chadwick, Way to Pentecost, p. 20

T    Holy Spirit enables successful praying.

55    "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us[a] with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God." Rom. 8:26,27
56    “The Spirit instructs and inspires prayer, gives intelligence and intensity to intercession, and brings reality and joy to communion with God. The Spirit-filled love to pray, and prayer that is in the Spirit must prevail.”—Samuel Chadwick, Way to Pentecost, p. 21
57    “The Christian knows that he has often knelt down averse to prayer, dead, dull, stupid; almost without desiring the blessings for which we ought to ask. And yet, with all his weakness, after looking for the aid of the Spirit, after praying as David did, “Lord, open thou my lips, and my mouth shall show forth thy praise.” And persevering in asking, seeking, and knocking, he has in such a remarkable way experienced the presence of God, as to fill him with joy unspeakable, and a hope full of glory. He has, in these cases, sometimes found an unction, an enlargement of expression, so far beyond any thing that he had previously calculated on, or could expect, accompanied by a lively and vehement desires and thirsting after God, and holiness.”  Edward Bickersteth, Simple Treatise on Prayer
58    “True prayer is the breathing of the life of God in the soul of man. It is the Spirit dwelling and breathing in him. It is the new nature pouring out its vital principle and that into the ear of the God whence it came. It is the cry of the feeble child turning to the Father it loves, and in all its conscious weakness, dependence and need, pouring out the yearnings of its full heart into the bosom where dwells nothing but love.” Octavius Winslow

U    Holy Spirit will bring about conversions.

59    "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:" John 16:8

V    Holy Spirit enables relationships

60    "Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need." Acts 4:32-35

W    Holy Spirit joins believers in the church.

61    "For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free...." 1 Cor. 12: 12,13

Y    The Spirit selected officers.

63    Acts. 20:28 “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”
64    Acts 15:28 “For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things.”
65    2 Cor. 12:7-11 “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”

Z    The presence of Spirit was a criteria when selecting officers.

66    Acts.6:3 “Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business....”

AA    Enabled successful ministry in the church.

67    Acts. 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
68    Acts. 4:31 “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.”
69    Acts 4:33 “And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.”

BB    Directed worship.

70    Php 3:3 “For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh....”
71    Acts. 4:31 “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.”
72    John 4:24 “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
73    "Honor the Holy Ghost as Master of assemblies; study much the secret of surrender to him; cultivate a quick ear for hearing his inward voice and a ready tongue for speaking his audible witness; be submissive to keep silence when he forbids as well as to speak when he commands, and we shal learn how much better is God's way of conducting the worship of his house than man's way." A. J. Gordon, The Ministry of the Spirit, p. 157

CC    Spirit brought forth godly worship

74    Eph. 5:18,19 “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord....”

DD    Spirit directed missionary activity

75    Selected Missionaries
vvv    Acts 13:2 “As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’”
76    Missionary Venues
www    Acts 8:29 “Go near and overtake the chariot.”
xxx    Acts 11:12 “Then the Spirit told me to go with them, doubting nothing....”
yyy    Acts 16:6,7 "Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.”
77    "Who can say that there is not need in these days of a return to primitive methods and of a resumption of the Church's primitive endowments? The Holy Spirit is not straitened in himself, but only in us. If the church had faith to lean less on human wisdom, to trust less in prudential methods, to administer less by mechanical rules, and to recognize once more the great fact that, having committed to her a supernatural work, she has appointed for her a supernatural power, who can doubt that the grinding and groaning of our cumbrous missionary machinery would be vastly lessened, and the demonstration of the Spirit be far more apparent?" A. J. Gordon, p. 166

EE    Additional thoughts

78    “The definition which we sometimes hear, that a church is “a voluntary association of believers, united together for the purposes of worship and edification” is most inadequate, not to say incorrect. It is no more true than that hands and feet and eyes and ears are voluntarily united in the human body for the purposes of locomotion and work. The church is formed from within; Christ is present by the Holy Ghost, regenerating men by the sovereign action of the Spirit, and organizing them into himself as the living center.” A. J. Gordon, Ministry of the Spirit
79    “The Church is the creation of the Holy Spirit. It is a community of believers who owe their religious life from first to last to the Spirit. Apart from Him there can be neither Christian nor Church.... The command to tarry in the city until there came enduement of power from on high proves that the one essential equipment of the Church is the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Chadwick, Way To Pentecost, p. 5
